Pause. Pray. Read. Be still. Write. Pray. Go about your day or turn in for the night.

Read: Jesus demonstrates his divine authority by paying the temple tax with a coin found in a fish’s mouth. This story calls us to consider how God’s provision is not simply limited by earthly circumstances, and he provides for our needs so often in unexpected ways.

Besides this story found in Matthew, there are numerous stories of God’s provision. Recall the story of the Israelites in the wilderness where God provided manna (bread) and quail to sustain them. Or with the feeding of the 5,000 by Jesus, where God multiplied a few loaves and fish to feed an extra-large crowd.

Be Still: How do these powerful stories of God’s provision help change your perspective of how God works in your life and in the world? Was there ever a time in your life when you were surprised by the way God provided something unexpected in your life? Give thanks to God for that time.

Prayer: God I cannot begin to express how grateful I am for the many ways you provide for my life. Help me to not take for granted the unexpected ways you work in my life and all of creation. You created all things, and in You they hold together – and because of your great kindness and provision, I rejoice! Amen.
