Pause. Pray. Read. Be still. Write. Pray. Go about your day or turn in for the night.
Read: Genesis 26: 22-25 Digging Wells of Peace
At last the Lord has created enough space
for us to prosper in this land.
(Genesis 26:22b, NLT)
Isaac was a man of wells. He persisted from one place to the next to restore, dig deeper, or dig anew the wellsprings of his faith.
Isaac’s efforts paid off. First in Rehoboth, where there was ample space for all to prosper in the land. But more importantly, in Beersheba, meaning Well of the Oath in Hebrew. After many moves and persisting forward in peace and trust, the Lord appeared to Isaac in Beersheba to reassure him that he was on the right track. He was, in the words of the prophet Isaiah, “drawing water from the wells of salvation (Isaiah 12:3).
Isaac’s lesson learned: Dig our wells of deliverance and renewal in the place where God leads us, wherever that is. We need not become disheartened when His providential purposes are delayed. Don’t give way to the temptation to give up or move on prematurely. Only keep praying and digging until we hit the fresh supply of redemptive waters.
Be still and Reflect: How does Isaac’s experiences in digging wells prompt you to approach your days differently? What step(s) can you take to renew or grow your spiritual vitality? (Consider both Inward Disciplines — Meditation, Prayer, Fasting, and Study; Outward Disciplines — Simplicity, Solitude, Submission, Service; and Corporate Disciplines — Confession, Worship, Guidance, Celebration.)
Pray: Dear Lord, I thank you for Your faithfulness and Your promises. Some days the journey wearies me with dissension and adversity. Guide me and strengthen me in these times as you did for Isaac. Make me fruitful as you did for Isaac. Lord, as I move through and forward from difficulties and contention, help me to keep my gaze upon Christ, the Prince of Peace. Empower me to find and dig new wells of fresh spiritual nourishment. Replenish my soul that I might reap Your favor in love, hope, and joy as I align with Your purposes for my life. In Christ’s name I pray, Amen.
