Read: Matthew 11:16-19  Will You Dance?

We played wedding songs, and you didn’t dance,
so we played funeral songs, and you didn’t mourn.
(Matthew 11:17, NRSVUE)

Life is a dance of one kind or another. Some days we glide to a Texas two-step; other days the music shifts beat to the Twist or a Tango. Some days we “Snoopy dance” with joy;  others, we walk to the beat of a funeral dirge. In every dance, though, God is present.

John the Baptist called the Israelites to mourn and repent of their spiritual poverty. Jesus’ signs and message of hope invited the people to Snoopy dance in the streets, celebrating the Messiah’s presence. Yet, nothing completely satisfied them…not the joy, the hope, nor the peace. Heaven drew near, but they did not dance.

Life’s dance involves both letting go and holding on. Letting go of assumptions, fears, personal agendas, limiting attitudes and behaviors. Holding on to Christ and God’s promises and truths.

Life is always a dance of one kind or another. Every dance has something to teach us. The question is who’s leading – Christ or us?

Be Still and Reflect: What dance reflects the style, rhythm, and pace of your life this week? Is it the Texas two-step, a slow waltz, the Twist, or Limbo, the Tango, a break-dance, or something else? Who, if anyone, is leading you through?

Pray: Lord of the Dance, I want to fill my dance card with You taking the lead. Help me to embrace the rhythm and pace, whatever it may be. And to dance with all my might. Guide me through the steps and never let me go. Amen.
