The Kingdom of Heaven and Legos

God’s kingdom is like a jewel merchant on the hunt for exquisite pearls.
Finding one that is flawless, he immediately sells everything and buys it.

Matthew 13:45-46, Message

God’s kingdom is like our 10-year-old granddaughter on the hunt for the exact Lego pieces that fit the jewelry design she envisioned.

That’s how I found myself among four adults and two children who spent an afternoon tediously picking through thousands upon thousands of tiny Legos in a variety of shapes and sizes. They filled not one, but two, 4’x2’x1’ bins to the brim.

I lost count of how many times I craned my neck to compare a possible Lego piece to the picture of the sought treasure only to have to toss it aside as unfit for our granddaughter’s inspired Lego locket. She would accept no other shape or color as a compromise.

After an hour of searching, eureka! The last exact piece was found. Our ecstatic granddaughter marched immediately to the checkout counter to purchase her treasured baggie of “jewels.”

Such is God’s kingdom. The search for this flawless “jewel” invites us to prioritize our days to pursue God’s best for us instead of clinging to those things that detract us from reflecting Christ, our ultimate treasure. And, as the merchant who acted immediately to claim that which is priceless, we must respond with urgency, not putting off spiritual decisions or growth for “someday.” Even if it means “selling” everything – comfort, status, or material security.

For the joy of the Kingdom far outweighs the loss.

Reflect:  We can have good ideas and plans, but they may not be God’s ideas or plans for us. In what ways are you willing to forego personal plans, possessions, and ambitions to say yes to the next right thing God asks of you today? To live more generously or sacrificially in this season?

Pray: Lord God, with deepest gratitude for Your faithfulness and love, I seek to follow in the footsteps of the one flawless “pearl” of immeasurable worth, Your only Son, Jesus Christ. Please lead me and strengthen me to persevere until I uncover that treasure and forsake all cheap imitations. In the name of your Son, Amen.
