Read:  Who are We Waiting On?

5Let all that I am wait quietly before God,

for my hope is in him.

He alone is my rock and my salvation,

my fortress where I will not be shaken.

My victory and honor come from God alone.

He is my refuge, a rock where no enemy can reach me.

O my people, trust in him at all times.
Psalm 62:5-8, NLT

I waited impatiently for the turning point the surgeon promised in my hip replacement recovery—the day I would walk without a limp, stand balanced on both legs, and could grit my way through therapy with fewer pain relievers. At five weeks post-surgery, that day arrived. Grateful and energized with hope, I praised God—awed by the intricate brilliance of a body designed to heal: hip flexors and quads growing stronger, incisions knitting shut, nerves reconnecting to move at command.

But then I wondered, what if my full recovery was like Cindy’s? She lay on the therapy table beside me and was still waiting on healing. Her body a battlefield of setbacks—two shoulder surgeries and a fresh MRI showing another potential tendon tear or rupture that doctors may or may not be able to repair.  Her hope hung by a thread, and that thread was fraying.

As I listened to Cindy’s despair, a question crystallized for me: Do I truly believe God is sovereign? And if so, will I sincerely wait with trust that, in His sovereignty, He will be loving and faithful to His promises?  Even if my hopes and dreams feel dashed? Even if my surgery and recovery do not achieve the healing the doctor and therapist said was possible or if it plateaus at a point less than I desire?

Sovereignty refers to ultimate authority and decision-making power. For world leaders, it means ruling nations. For God, it means ruling galaxies, nature, timelines, and even the extent of healing achieved. His power is unlimited. His purpose, unstoppable (Isaiah 45:9–19; Romans 8:18–39).

And so, there is no middle ground. Whoever we believe holds the reins of our lives—that is the one we wait on. Whoever or whatever I believe has unlimited power and control over the affairs of my life and that of the world—that is the One who leads my impatient soul to quiet and peace.

So who are we ultimately waiting for and entrusting our lives? Today many of us find ourselves waiting for…

  • The doctor to call with test results?
  • The market to shift or government leaders to fix the economy?
  • Someone we love and miss to call us?
  • The recruiter to call with a job offer—or our boss to call about layoffs?
  • The other shoe to drop in some troubling circumstance?

Or are we waiting ultimately on God and His next move—the Rock, the Fortress, the only One who never fails to carry us to victory?

Reflect: What or who are you waiting for today? Name it. Now ask yourself—am I waiting for my hope in the outcome…or for the One who holds the outcome?

Pray: Sovereign God, still my restless heart. Teach me to wait—not on outcomes, people, or signs—but on You. Anchor my hope in Your unshakable promises. Whether You move mountains or simply sit with me in the valley, enable me to trust that You are good, powerful, and always near.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
