Read: Leviticus 19:1-19 and 1 Peter 1:13-16
Weaving Holiness
Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy…
Keep my decrees.
Do not mate different kinds of animals.
Do not plant your field with two kinds of seed.
Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material.
(Leviticus 19:2, 19, NIV)
As we approach Lent, let’s explore the biblical messages around weaving, particularly how it relates to weaving into our lives God’s call to be holy as He is holy.
The pursuit of holiness can feel daunting until we remember … holiness is a lifelong process of weaving the image of Christ into our very being. That’s why God couples this call with His enduring forgiveness, love, and grace. With that thought in mind, today’s verses begin to clarify what God is calling us to – that is, weaving our daily life into wholeness and purity, a oneness with Him.
Wholeness is a coherent system of parts that fit or work together in harmonious unity, not lacking or faulting in any way. God instructed the Israelites not to mix different kinds of cattle, crops, or weaving of materials in order to sensitize them to living wholly by no other parameters than His. It was a call to a life that would distinguish them from other nations of their time.
By the same token, neither are we to mix worldly values with our spiritual values. The Lord calls us to live a holy life, meaning one ‘set apart’ and distinct. One that reflects the holiness of God in our actions and decisions (1 Peter 1:13-16). This doesn’t mean we isolate ourselves from the world, but rather that we engage with the world in a way that wholly reflects His nature – His holiness and love.
Be Still and Reflect: What does it mean to you to live a holy life, set apart? How is your love of God wholly woven into the fabric of your daily life?
Pray: Holy God, help me to draw closer to living the pure and holy life to which You call me. Open my heart to love others without bias and considering their true needs; to think more about what I can give, rather than what I can get. Help me to weave into this day and everyday kindness, generosity, and truthfulness according to Your Word. Let me weave together patience and forgiveness into every decision, word, and action that I take. In the name of You Son, Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
By His Grace,
Gloria
