Read: John 14:25-31 Where Do We Find Peace?
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.
I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled,
and do not let them be afraid.
(John 14:27, NRSV)
The peace Christ leaves us is not absence of difficulties, pain, and grief; it is absence of fear and anxiety in the midst of difficulties, pain, and grief. How can that be?
In today’s scripture, as Jesus drew near to Jerusalem and the cross, he prepared his disciples for his impending death. He openly shared what was ahead for him and them. Yet, he also reassured them that neither he nor the Father would abandon them during these troubled times. Instead, Jesus pointed his disciples to God’s provision – His Holy Spirit, who would come to dwell within and bring comfort, sustaining power, and guidance throughout every situation.
Christ is our peace. Through the Holy Spirit, he does for us that which we cannot do for ourselves – find peace in mind, body, and soul. By remaining connected to and in relationship with Christ, we can find the everlasting inner peace and wholeness we long for, even when we’re in the middle of the most difficult circumstances or losses. Our prayers and relationship with Christ swallow up the question of “How can I do this?” Because we can trust that He is with us, and He provides.
John Newton, the captain of a slave ship who turned Anglican cleric and wrote Amazing Grace, also penned the hymn Though Troubles Assail, in which he wrote:
Though troubles assail and dangers affright,
Though close friends should fail us and foes all unite,
Yet one thing secures us, whatever betide,
The promise assures us the Lord will provide.
Be still and Reflect: How has the promise of the indwelling Holy Spirit as guide and comforter impacted your journey of faith? How do you rely on the Spirit for peace when you face life’s uncertainties?
Pray: Heavenly Father, I come before You with gratitude for this promise of peace found in Christ. Thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit to help me navigate the complexities of this world with confidence in Your love, grace, and guidance. As I face doubts and distresses, Let the peace that Jesus gives be that constant anchor for my soul. In the name of Your Son, the Prince of Peace, I pray. Amen.
By His Grace,
Gloria
