On a Mission from God

After Jesus prepared his disciples for his death, he prayed to His Father,
“ I have glorified you on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do…
I have revealed your name to the people you gave me from this world.”
(John 17:4, 6 CEB)

“They’re not going to catch us because we’re on a mission from God. So, hit it!” said paroled convict Jake as he jumped into his brother Elwood’s car.

Jake and Elwood repeated this mantra throughout the 1980 comedy movie, The Blues Brothers. They believed they would escape the relentless pursuit of police and survive misfortunes as long as they were on “a mission from God.” Their mission: prevent the foreclosure of the Roman Catholic orphanage in which they were raised by earning the $5,000 needed to pay its property tax bill.

God’s eternal mission is to redeem, restore, and unite all humanity and creation under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. In the person of His Son, God showed us what He wanted done and how to do it.

Jesus completed the work His Father gave him to do. He did his part, but the eternal  mission is not yet fulfilled. Now, Jesus has passed the baton to us, to continue what he began.

God assigns each of us a mission. It’s our personal calling or purpose to advance His kingdom. So jump in; hit it!

Be still and Reflect: Reflect on times in your life when you felt a sense of purpose or mission. How did it impact your actions and decisions? How can you actively participate in God’s mission of redemption, reconciliation, and restoration in your family, community, and beyond?

Pray: Gracious God, thank You for entrusting me with a mission—a purpose that is greater than myself. As I reflect on the example of Jesus, empower me to embrace my role in Your eternal plan of redemption and restoration. Grant me the courage to step forward and hit the road trusting that You go before me and walk alongside me. May I be an instrument of Your love, spreading hope and healing wherever I go. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

By His Grace,
