Threads of Grace: From Music to Baptism
“Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said,
rivers of living water will flow from within them.”
- John 7:38 (NIV)
On Sunday, our family experienced a moment that felt divinely orchestrated. Years ago, at our wedding, Debussy’s masterful piano work Clair de Lune graced the ceremony with its timeless beauty as my wife walked down the aisle. Sunday, as we celebrated the baptism of our children, that very piece of music emerged again, seamlessly intertwined with Jesus Loves Me. It was unexpected and yet perfect—a poignant link between the milestones of our journey as a family, from the vows we made to the commitment we now affirm for our children in faith. As the first few notes were played, I sat in awe and told my wife, “we couldn’t have even planned this.”
Moments like this remind us that God’s hand is in the details. Music has a way of transcending words, drawing us into a place of awe and reverence. Sunday, Clair de Lune mingled with Jesus Loves Me, and it felt as though heaven itself was affirming the sacredness of this occasion. It’s a reminder of the enduring love of Christ that covers not just our lives but also the lives of our children as they take their first steps in faith.
Of course, as with all sacred moments, there was a touch of humor. In the days leading up to Sunday, our daughter misheard the word “baptize” as “bathtime.” So, as we walked into church that morning, she stopped at the door with a puzzled look and asked, “Why am I taking a bath at church today?!” Her innocent confusion had us all laughing as we headed inside, adding a lighthearted note to a very meaningful day.
As the music played and the water was poured on Sunday, I was reminded that God is in the moments we plan and the ones we could never plan for. God is in the laughter of children and the beauty of a melody. God is in the questions and the quiet assurance of His love. Just as Clair de Lune and Jesus Loves Me blended into one seamless piece, so too do the threads of all our lives weave together under God’s care.
Reflect:
- Whether you’ve been baptized or witnessed a baptism, how has this sacrament deepened your understanding of God’s love and grace?
- Is there a piece of music or hymn that brings you closer to God? How does it speak to your heart or remind you of His love?
Prayer: Gracious God, thank You for the moments in life where Your presence feels unmistakable, reminding us that You are always near. Help us to see Your hand in the details, to laugh with joy in sacred moments, and to nurture the seeds of faith in the next generation. Amen.
With faith, hope, and love,
Eric Smith
