Matthew 19:24 Tight Squeezes
In fact, it’s easier for a camel to squeeze through the eye of a needle
than for a rich person to enter God’s kingdom.
Matthew 19:24, CEB
Did you know this verse does not refer to a sewing needle?
In ancient times Jerusalem gates had two large leaves and a smaller door called the eye of the needle intended only for the passage of pedestrians. When the large gates were closed, getting a camel through the eye of the needle required the camel to shed its load and bend its legs and neck. It was a difficult task that often left scratches.
Three of the four gospels record today’s passage (Matthew 19:24, Mark 10:25, and Luke 18:25). When we read beyond the one verse, we find that Jesus’ teaching was not about it being impossible for a rich man to get into heaven. Instead, he was reminding us that whether we are rich or poor, we must shed our earthly burdens and priorities, kneel before God in humble obedience, and acknowledge Him as the way to salvation and eternal life.
Also, an unknown author reminds us that “on this journey you will get scratches along the way.”
Reflect: How does understanding the cultural context of the “camel through the eye of a needle” metaphor deepen your interpretation of Jesus’ teaching about wealth, salvation, and eternal life? How is God calling you to think or act differently as you go about your day?
Prayer: Lord God, As I delve into the depths of Your word, help me to uncover and grasp the richness of its meaning beyond the surface. For today, guide me in surrendering earthly burdens and priorities for Yours in humble obedience and acknowledging Your sovereignty as the path to salvation and eternal life. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
