Read: Holy Disruptions
‘Prepare the way of the Lord;
make his paths straight.
Every valley shall be filled,
and every mountain and hill shall be made low,
and the crooked shall be made straight,
and the rough ways made smooth,
and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’
Luke 3:4-6, NRSV
Redeeming roadways of congestion can feel like a never-ending mess. Take Highway 380 toward Denton, for instance. Navigating it these days feels like threading a needle through a maze of brake lights, orange cones, and towering construction equipment. The Department of Transportation promises transformation ultimately—a wider highway with sleek overpasses that will carry us smoothly to our destinations. But for now, delays, detours, and creeping commutes disrupt our flow and test our patience.
God’s redemptive work mirrors this process—holy disruptions that upend the status quo to bring about transformation. Christ’s sacrifice on the cross didn’t just smooth over our sins; it overhauled everything, shifting us from dead-end detours into the fast lane of sanctification. This ongoing work of becoming more like Jesus demands surrender, trust, and a willingness to endure the construction zones of the soul. God’s Word reroutes our priorities, reshaping how we think, who and what we worship, and act. He shreds the world’s misshaped roadmaps of success and instead prepares a straight and level way for His second coming.
Neither does God stop with us individually—His healing work on the world disrupts the broken systems there as well. He will straighten the crooked paths of injustice, raise up the downtrodden, displace ungodly rulers, and remove barriers that keep the oppressed from freedom. Like a highway project rippling into neighborhoods, God’s grace reshapes society in ways that can challenge our comforts and assumptions. His salvation will disrupt to heal, dismantle to rebuild, and confront to redeem.
The process can feel messy, but the outcome is worth the wait. God’s redemptive roadwork promises a future where wrongs are righted, valleys are lifted, and the way is made clear for His glory to shine through.
Reflect: How has God’s salvation and redemption disrupted your life? How might He be asking you to trust Him today through disruptions for the sake of your transformation or that of the world?
Pray: Redeeming God, Thank You for disrupting the brokenness in me and the world around me with Your transforming grace. Help me to trust the process, even when it feels inconvenient or uncomfortable. Shape me to reflect Your love and truth. Use me as part of Your work to prepare the way for Your kingdom to come. Amen.
